Emilia Gordon spent the night snoozing in her favourite red leather armchair, facing the window. She watched the sea darken until it was a black mass extending into an unlit distance. She listened to the calming lullaby of the waves, but it did not make her sleepy - just happy. This is how she felt every night, ever since she moved into this place for the so-called elderly. The more honest term would be ‘the almost dead’, she chuckled to herself. But in this very pleasant home, the old people surprised their relatives by living far longer than expected. Was it the sea air? Or the view they had, of life beyond the horizon?
Did I ever expect to live this long, so long that I have trouble remembering my actual age, she wondered, not for the first time. That peculiar young man with his talk of royalties and literary celebrity and - identity? - was that really what he said? Identity?
